Q1. What is FTP?

A1. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Using FTP Software you have the ability to send or receive files to or from servers that are connected to the Internet. Text Documents, Spreadsheets, Image Files, Drawings, and Program Files can be sent and received. All types of files created on or by a computer can be transferred using FTP.

Q2. Can I have a personal website on WVI?

A2. Yes - unmetered dialup and DSL accounts are entitled to 25MB of personal web space.

Q3. How do I get my Home Page on the Internet ?

A3. Once you have created your "Home Page" you need to place the files (HTML and Images) in your user directory on the web server. The following are the procedures for transferring files using WS_FTP. If you are using other FTP software, consult the user manual.

1. Connect to WVI
2. Start your FTP Software Application
3. You will need to enter the following information:
- Host Name: ftp.wvi.com
- Host Type: Sun Solaris or UNIX
- User Name: your username
- Password: your password
4. Once logged in, your window will be split into two parts. On the left is your computer, on the right, the WVI computer.
5. Change to the directory that contains the files on your computer that you wish to transfer.
6. Change to the "public_html" directory on the WVI computer.
7. Highlight the files you wish to transfer and press the arrow button in the center of your screen that points to the WVI Computer.
8. You will see a status indicator as the files are being transferred.
9. When the transfer is complete, you will see a list of files now on the WVI computer.

Q4. What is my home page address?

A4. Your home page address will be http://www.wvi.com/~yourname...if your username was "johndoe" your website address would be http://www.wvi.com/~johndoe. Since it is just like your e-mail address, it should be easy for friends and family to remember.

Q5. I want a specific domain name. Is this possible?

A5. Yes - we can assist you with obtaining your own domain name and hosting your site. We have several packages available at reasonable rates. Sign up for domain hosting services at https://www.wvi.com/signup/virt_signup.php3 or contact customer service at 503.767.1984 or 503.394.1984.
