FTP - Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
This page contains answers to some of the common
questions asked by users of the WVI system about FTP.
- What is FTP?
FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. Using FTP Software you have the
ability to send or receive files to or from servers that are connected
to the Internet. Text Documents, Spreadsheets, Image Files, Drawings, and
Program Files can be sent and received. All types of files created on or
by a computer can be transferred using FTP.
- How do I get my Home Page on the Internet ?
WVI Customers with full or unmetered accounts are
provided file storage space on the WVI server. Once you have created your
"Home Page" you need to place the files (HTML and Images) in your user
directory on the server. The following are the procedures for transferring
files using WS_FTP. If you are using other FTP software, consult the user
manual. (Download a copy of WS_FTP for Win95/98 from T.U.C.O.W.S.)
Step by Step instructions:
- Dial in to WVI
- Start your FTP Software Application
- You will need to enter the following information:
- Host Name: ftp.wvi.com
- Host Type: Sun Solaris or UNIX
- User Name: your username
- Password: your password
- Once logged in, your window will be split into two parts. On the left is your computer, on the right, the WVI computer.
- Change to the directory that contains the files on your computer that you wish to transfer.
- Change to the "public_html" directory on the WVI computer.
- Highlight the files you wish to transfer and press the arrow button in the center of your screen that points to the WVI Computer.
- You will see a status indicator as the files are being transferred.
- When the transfer is complete, you will see a list of files now on the WVI computer.
The following information may be required by other FTP applications:
- The path to your user directory: "/usr1/dialups/yourusername/public_html/"
- FTP port #: 21
Once your files have been successfully transferred, start your browser and
type in the URL to your home page: "http://www.wvi.com/~yourusername/".
If you named your file "index.htm", "index.html", or "Welcome.html", the page will
be displayed automatically. If there is not a file named index.htm, index.html,
or Welcome.html, you will see: Forbidden You don't have permission to access /username/
on this server.
- How do I Publish my web site with FrontPage98?
To publishing your FrontPage you must:
- Close all open pages in the FrontPage Editor.
- Open up your local web site with FrontPage Explorer.
- In the FrontPage Explorer, click the
button on the toolbar.
- The Publish FrontPage Web dialog box is displayed. In this dialog box, specify the Location or URL to which you want
to publish the current FrontPage web. Note: This is just a label and you can actually rename this anything you want.

In the Publish FrontPage Web dialog box, click OK.
- FTP Server Name is wvi.com
Directory Path is usr1/dialups/username/public_html
where you substitute your username here.

Click NEXT.
- User Name: username
where you substitute your username.
Password: *******
where you type in your password.

Click FINISH.
In a couple of seconds, FrontPage will begin Publishing (or uploading) your files.
- How do I get my web address (or URL) to work?
You need to name your default, opening page as "index.htm" or "index.html".
If you are getting a 403 Forbidden error, that is generally the cause.
- Tips
- File names are case sensitive on our web servers.
- Make sure your files names do not have spaces in them.
Use an underscore if needed.
e.g. my_file_name.htm.
(Note: files with spaces in the names will not display in Netscape.)
