Trento to Moena

After a minimal breakfast at the Venize Hotel, Scott and I hit the road together on a sunny Sunday morning.
We had trouble finding our way out of Trento to Civezanno. Ended up climbing a steep footpath by the university, followed by a rapid descent above SS47.
At Civezanno we were on track with enjoyable riding. The hills were scenic and we passed a number of vineyards. We came across a number of locals out on their Sunday rides. Full matching team shorts and jerseys seemed to be the style.

We came across cyclists on their Sunday training rides and at Lases; a full-scale triathlon was in progress.

Hail and thunder at our lunch stop

We stopped for a nice al fresco lunch of pizza and wine. Just as we were preparing to depart, a thunderstorm moved in with hail and lightening. We waited out the lightening, then set off in the rain. The rain stopped after about 30 minutes of riding. We had quiet and scenic country roads to just outside Castle, where we picked up the bike path to Predazzo.

Riding into Moena, the surrounding mountains reminded us of Half Dome in Yosemite National Park.

Moena

Moena

Moena is an attractive resort town serving the outdoor enthusiast. We stayed at the Sport Hotel. A man was setting on the patio and Scott asked what was on the dinner menu. He gave us a wave of the hand and called on his cell phone in Italian. I assumed he didn't speak English and was summoning someone to answer Scott's question. As I started to wander off, he said, "sit down, take a load off" in English with a midwestern lilt. This blew me away. After talking to him we found he moved here after retirement from Youngstown, Ohio, and with his family operated the hotel. He was Italian-American and had retained his Italian language skills. That evening he used his computer to print out route information for our next day's route across the Pordoi and Falzarego passes. Although the hotel was comfortable, we didn't sleep well. A car alarm was blaring on and off all night in the parking lot below the hotel.
Totals for today were 46.8 miles and 3478 feet of climbing.
