Salzburg

Our plans for Salzburg were to visit Mozart historical sites, take the bus to Berchtesgaden and get Scott's wheel trued. We stayed in a typical ancient building of the 15th century, located in the old city center in the pedestrian zone. Scott found the hotel in his guidebook and made reservations when we arrived at the train station.

We walked around the city center looking for dinner possibilities, phone card phones, and sightseeing. The next morning we rode down to Eybl Intersport. This was recommended by a sporting goods store in Bruck that Scott had stopped at. Our innkeeper gave us directions; she made it sound as if the shop was only about a mile or so away. Riding to the store, we kept stopping, because we were covering almost 5 miles and felt we must be missing it. We came upon an impressive sized building with many sporting departments. It was very similar to a large REI store in the western states. Scott checked into the service department to have his wheel trued and we shopped to kill the time. They had a good inventory of parts, bikes and clothes. I was still having trouble with my saddle; a saddle sore developed on my first ride day and had not healed. I selected a saddle and a handlebar bag. The exchange rate was very favorable, $43 total. Scott bought a cyclometer as his had failed, and a Scott brand jersey and shorts. Yesterday's rain finally stopped while we were in the store. We rode back to the hotel, stowed our purchase and bikes, and then walked to catch the bus to Berchtesgaden. Berchtesgaden is a beautiful German resort town, located amongst lakes and mountains. It's a popular destination for Germans to vacation during the summer. Adolph Hitler had a home there and homes for the top officers of the Third Reich. I had visited the Eagle's Nest previously, but today the clouds appeared too low to enjoy the mountaintop view. We took the bus from Berchtesgaden to Lake Königssee, a beautiful lake enclosed by mountains. I wanted to take the boat back to the Church of St. Bartholomew on the lake, but we wouldn't have time to connect back to the last bus to Salzburg. We had lunch and walked along the lake to a luge run. Catching the bus back to Salzburg, we walked around searching for Mozart's birthplace. We kept circling the area, following the map till we found the building. We then walked across the river and toured the building where Mozart lived for several years. They showed a video telling the story of Mozart and his family. Back to the hotel to get ready for dinner, we found a beer garden close by and enjoyed a nice meal.
