Shop Local this Holiday Season

In small rural communities we rely on each other more so than those who live in larger communities rely on each other. We depend on local businesses as well. They depend on us as customers. Local businesses are huge supporters of schools and school activities, sports’ programs and activities, the library, the pool, scouting, and many other activities, programs and charities. It is the proverbial two way street that requires loyalty from both sides. To have a productive community with a high quality of life for its residents, local residents and local businesses need to support each other. Businesses have been loyal to the community while residents have a spotty record in being loyal to the business community. Shop locally, buy locally is more than a cute slogan. It is a way of life for small communities. We cannot expect local businesses to fund local projects unless we take to heart (and our wallets) the shop local, buy local attitude. We are fortunate enough in this community to have dozens of businesses financially support our local causes because they believe in the community and its people. They do so from the heart and do not ask for anything in return, and yet if we are not loyal to them they may not be able to help when needed. I cannot list here all the business heroes in this column, but let me name just a few, starting with the Stayton/Sublimity Chamber of Commerce. Postal Connections, SCTC, Slayden Construction, Roth’s, NORPAC, Jensen-Kreitzer, Frank Lumber, Fresh to You Produce, Freres Lumber, Stayton Builder’s Mart, West Coast Bank, Star Cinema, Covered Bridge Café, A&W, US Bank and Dairy Queen, are just a few of the companies we should be thanking with our loyalty. There are many, many more. Think about it and put together your own list. Stayton Cooperative Telephone Company (SCTC) is one of the companies that stand out. They donate to many local charities and organizations and do everything from providing video equipment for the high school to putting on a major food drive. They are able to do this because we buy their products, which they are continually adding to in order to provide us with excellent service and the latest technology. Having said that about SCTC, the City of Stayton benefits directly through their success in the form of franchise fees SCTC pays to the city for every phone line they provide to the community. This fee goes to help fund police, pool, library, parks and other city services provided to the residents. Loyalty goes a long way in a small community. A successful business community means a great quality of life for citizens. Shop Local, Buy Local! Gerry Aboud, Stayton Mayor
