2010, THE GOOD, THE BAD
& THE UGLY

I like to end on a good note, so let's take these observations in reverse order.
THE UGLY: The amount of money the city of Stayton spent on defending itself against councilors Loftus and Frank for the charges of an investigation from the state attorney generals' office with regard to the destruction of records they charged the city with. The AG's office dismissed this charge. The city trying to come up with other fees to fund needed street maintenance and sidewalk repair. Why is that in tough economic times, our government raises the fees for everything? I've always said that government rises to the extent of it's funding. The two councilors that are not supporting PEG and funding. They would prefer to see it set up as a "Do It Yourself" project or not at all. How disruptive and unproductive they are at council meetings.
THE BAD: All the retail spaces empty and either up for rent or sale. Recently I counted 14 in our community plus several in Sublimity. Add in all the houses for sale or in foreclosure and that does not speak well to our local economy. Plus on Wilco Road, there are several large empty former manufactures with buildings up for sale. It's been a long time since new businesses have come to Stayton/Sublimity plus up the canyon. Who ever said the economy was improving hasn't been here in some time. I have not seen any signs that employment is up and with all those who have now fallen off the state employment radar, that puts Marion counties unemployment at least around 18%. Everything has gone up but wages for the private sector some government workers as well. This time of the year is especially difficult because of extra power and heating costs plus the pressure of "Delivering" the goods for Christmas. If you look at just Craig's list alone, you can see from the ads that folks are desperate. What to do?
THE GOOD! That we can live in small communities that help and look after each other in these troubling times. We have some churches and charities that are tremendous assets in helping not only the elderly but all walks of families and individuals that need help. Friends of the Family, The Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, The American Red Cross and the Rotary, Kiwanis, Lions clubs and the Moose have gone beyond the call of duty to help out our communities. Private citizens that make quiet donations to help those of use who need it. A great hospital that gives until they bleed. A police force that takes the time to get to know us by name, knows who the trouble makers are and keeps an eye on them. City staff that live here and really care about their community. Businesses that work hard to stay here, be competitive and provide us with the entertainment, goods and services that we don't have to travel out of town for. Also good is the recent election that gives us new councilors and a new mayor. Which in conclusion I'd like to say that our former mayor went to the wall to make sure that we had a major improvement to the Stayton/Sublimity highway 22 interchange and the foot bridge over the Mill Creek stream. Not to be overlooked are the personal services and sacrifices that our city administrator has made in getting the city staff to work together as well as they do.
And finally to all of you who do the little things that never get mentioned.
Merry Christmas ! That's just my opinion, what's yours?
