Richard “Dick” Henry Hamel
April 26, 1938 – August 15, 2009


Salem – Dick, 71, died Saturday in Salem. He was born in Webster, Massachusetts, and grew up in North Grosvenordale, Conneticut. Dick moved to Georgia in 1971 to Jacksonville, Florida in 1985 and finally to Salem in 2004. He served in the US Navy as an air traffic controller mainly on Aircraft Carriers from 1956 until his retirement in 1975, serving two tours in Vietnam.

Dick was a coin dealer all of his life, owning and operating his own coin shop in Florida. He was a member of the  American Numismatic Association, Florida United Numismatists Inc., and Salem Coin Club. Dick was a nationally recognized token and metal expert, and the Author of Excelsior Shoe Company Tokens book. For the last five years, he assisted Monte at Monte’s Coins and More in Stayton. Dick enjoyed collecting coins, and watching sports, especially the Boston Celtics and the Boston Red Sox.

He married Judith Ann Ramage on August 13, 1988 in Woodbine, Georgia. Dick is survived by his wife: Judy of Salem; Sons: James Hamel of Atlanta, Georgia, and John Hamel of Brunswick, Georgia; Step-daughter: Holly Ann Cain of Truckee, California; and cousins: Lawrence Bellerose and Annette Sauss.

At his request there will be no services. Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. Serving the family North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
