Verna J. Hawkins
June 26, 1940 – January 4,  2009

Jefferson - Verna Joyce Hawkins passed away on Sunday, January 4, at her Jefferson home, where she was lovingly cared for by her family and friends during her final stage of cancer.  Verna was born on June 26, 1940 in Myrnam, Alberta Canada, where the hospital staff nick-named her "Dolly".  Proud parents Fredrick and Anne Trenchuk welcomed their little girl home and introduced her into the surrounding Ukrainian community.

In 1956, the Trenchuk family moved to Calgary, Alberta where Verna became employed as secretary at the international Engineering firm of Rule, Wynn and Rule. Being a tireless worker with a great head for numbers, the very stylish Verna impressed her employers and proved herself an invaluable asset.  After a whirl-wind courtship of three months, Verna married Haskell Hawkins, a handsome minister from the U.S. on January 15, 1961 and moved to Missouri to be a dutiful pastors' wife. In 1967, the young couple moved to Jefferson where Haskell would pastor the Scravel Hill Church of God (7th Day) and started his construction business - Triple H Construction. Verna worked side by side with Haskell, serving as secretary for the church and for their construction business, but her most important job was in the home.

Verna epitomized the title Home-maker and that was where her heart was day and night. Her greatest joy was doting on her four children and attending to every detail of their care. Verna's skills shined the brightest in the kitchen - where her pies were legendary and her home-style cooking was second to none. After Verna's children were grown, she served as Chair of the Women's Ministry committee at the Marion Church of God (Seventh Day) where she worked tirelessly to meet the needs of her congregation. People often commented on how fast she could do things calling her a “house on fire”. God found himself a useful and willing servant in Verna - a gift to us all.

Verna is preceded in death by her husband, Haskell Hawkins; her parents, Fredrick and Anne Trenchuk; and her sister, Shirley Trenchuk. She is survived by her brother, James Trenchuk; her sisters, Doreen Schrock and Donna Jones; her children, Michael (Priscilla) Hawkins; Melanie (Joel) Beattie; Charvae (Rick) Madsen; Craig (Debra) Hawkins; and 13 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at the Jefferson Cemetery on Saturday, January 13 at 3:00 pm with a desert reception following, at the Marion Church of God 7th Day. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
