Mill City, OR. – Norma
Jean Poteet Long was born December 14, 1930 in Miami, Oklahoma.
She died January 23, 2009 at her home in Mill City after a 20
year battle with cancer.
Norma spent her early
years in Newberg where the family relocated in 1936 from
Oklahoma. A graduate of Newberg High School, Norma completed
secretarial training before embarking on a career as a legal and
She met the love of
her life, George Long, at a dance at Watkins Park in Gladstone
that she was attending with her sister and brother-in-law, Nita
and Bob Herring. Norma married George on October 27, 1950 at
Nita and Bob’s home in Newberg. The four remained close
friends while raising their families.
Norma and George lived
in Newberg for the first 18 years of their marriage where their
four children, Mike, Linda, Kevin and Jerry, were born. The
family moved to Mill City in December 1968 where Norma and
George purchased the local newspaper, The Mill City Enterprise.
Norma and George published the newspaper together until selling
the business in January 1994.
Norma was involved in
the community through many clubs and service organizations. She
was an active member of the Eagles Auxiliary where she served as
an officer for many years. One of her greatest joys was
attending the events and activities of her 16 grandchildren. She
was an enthusiastic supporter enduring rain and snow as well as
100+ degree temperature to cheer them on. Norma also enjoyed
reading, baking and watching the Portland Trailblazers.
Norma will be greatly
missed by her husband of 58 years, George, and children; Linda
and Jim Boessenecker of Clayton, CA., Kevin and Sheri Long of
Linden, Utah, and Jerry and Jill Long of Salem; brother-in-law
and sister-in-law Mike and Jan Long of Mill City and brother and
sister-in-law Edward (Smokey) and Ruby Poteet of Lebanon. Norma
is loved by 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren as well
as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Norma was preceded in
death by her son, Mike, and grandson, Jason.
services will be held at Fairview Cemetery, Mill City. Memorial
Services are scheduled for 2:00 PM Thursday, January 29, 2009 at
the North Santiam Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge, 620 Broadway,
Mill City. Memorial Contributions can be made in her honor to
any charitable fund of the North Santiam Fraternal Order of
Eagles, PO Box 604, Mill City, OR. 97360 or to a charity of your
