Verlin Dean Reed

Verlin Dean Reed, a longtime resident of Scio, Oregon, went to be with the Lord on December 6th, 2009 at 11 am. He passed away of natural causes in the comfort of his home at the age of 86. Born in 1923 to a farming family in rural White County, Indiana, he went on to pursue an engineering degree at Purdue University. His studies were interrupted, however, by World War II, and he and his college roommate enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1943. Thereafter, Dean Reed became a squadron leader at the age of 21, and as a Captain he led 21 B-17 bombing missions that helped cripple Germany’s ability to wage war. Upon his return to the States, Dean completed his degree in aeronautical engineering and married his sweetheart, Anita Wilson, on the very same day! (February 1st, 1948.) They immediately drove out to find work in California, and Dean eventually settled into a distinguished 35-year career with NASA at the Ames Research Facility at Moffett Field in Mountain View, where he headed the testing of state-of-the-art jet aircraft, high-speed bombers, and Apollo spacecraft in the facilities’ wind tunnels.

Dean and Anita had five children, Ronald, Brian, Susann, D.J. and Diane, and in their spare time, they launched Ways & Praise Ministries to provide Christian sermons on audio cassettes to people all around the world, free of charge. When Dean retired, he and his family moved to Scio, Oregon, where they lived happily on their small farm. Dean then pastored the local Mount Pleasant Community Church until Anita passed away in 1986. In 1987, Dean married Salem resident Laura Jean Carlson, and they subsequently devoted their lives to engaging in a mobile ministry unit called MMAP, in which they traveled to Christian churches all around the country to build or repair their facilities and outdoor camps. During this time, they also frequently visited their adult children in various locations around the U.S., demonstrating their immense love and devotion to family.

Verlin Dean Reed is survived by his wife Dori and all of his immediate children, as well as his grandchildren Joshua and Jacob Reed and Samuel and Zachary Hoying. In addition, he is survived by Dori’s adult children and grandchildren (whom he knew well), which include Christy Carlson, James and Karen Creely and family, Art and Jeanette Carlson and family, and Barbara Carlson. Dean Reed‘s loving and caring spirit is treasured by so many people, and he will be greatly missed.

Funeral Service is Thursday December 10, 2009 at 12:00 p.m. at Church of Nazarene in Stayton, Oregon. Arrangements by Weddle Funeral Services.
