Detroit – Ron, 73,
died Sunday in an automobile accident on highway 22 in
Detroit. He was born in Moose Lake, Minnesota. Ron was raised in
the Scott Mills area, which he loved and moved to Detroit in 1955
his favorite place. Ron served in the US Army , briefly in the
early 1960’s. He
loved the mountains, the woods, Detroit and the lake, and he
enjoyed cutting firewood. Ron
spent over 36 years working for the US Forest Service on the
Detroit Ranger District. During that extended period of time he
worked under 11 District Rangers. He started his career, and had
many stories concerning his time, maintaining trails and the many
miles of phone lines that serviced the lookouts and guard stations
on the District. Ron worked many years in fire control and in
later years he was a timber sale administrator working with many
different logging companies during the hey day of logging in the
canyon.
On weekends you could
expect to see him driving up the street in his 1940 old green
chevy, which was his pride and joy, headed to one of the local
restaurants for his morning coffee.
He was steady and
reliable and believed in right and wrong and using common sense.
Ron was one of the pioneers in the Upper Santiam Canyon from the
1950’s-1980’s. We have lost a vast historian of the area. He
will be greatly missed. Survivors: Son and daughter-in-law:
