Robert L. Hartmann
June 10, 1929 - April 1, 2010

 

Stayton – Robert “Bob”, 80, died Thursday April 1 in Salem. He was born to Angeline and Alfred Hartmann in Portland and was raised in Sublimity. Bob married Marlene Odenthal on February 9, 1952 in Stayton. Bob served in the US Navy, stationed in Hawaii during the Korean War. Upon returning to the mainland, he farmed row crops from 1954 – 1972. From 1971 – 1976 he taught photo and construction skills at Cascade High School. In 1973 Bob joined the 1042nd M.I. Oregon Army National Guard where he rose to rank of Master Sergeant. In 1976 Bob began working as an Operations Specialist for the US Government. Bob retired in 1991 after a total of 29 years of service to his country. 

He enjoyed sailing, painting, photography, woodworking, teaching art to local area students and all things Hawaiian. Bob was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, American Legion and was a  Knights of Columbus honorary life member. Bob served as the organizer of the Stayton blood drives for 11 years, he also served on the Stayton Telephone Cooperative Board for more than 25 years, the Santiam Memorial Hospital Board and the Board of Directors for the Santiam Stampede.

He is survived by his wife and first mate of 58 years: Marlene of West Stayton;  Children, Beckie (Donn) Roth of Salem, Jim (Mary) Hartmann of Lakewood, CO. Robin (Greg) Billie of Glenview, IL., Brenda (Todd) Gescher and Karen (Joe) Lulay both of Sublimity; Siblings, Geri (Bob) Kottre of Anchorage, AK., Leland (Molly) Hartmann of Sherwood;  Linda (Al) Fleener, of Anchorage, AK., Sandra Gustetter of Sacramento, CA.; and Dennis (Lorraine) Hartmann of Seattle, WA.; Grandchildren, Kerri (Daniel) Roy, Tommy Hartmann, Danny Hartmann, Regan Billie, Sean Billie, Nikki Hendricks, Tara Hendricks, Jack Gescher, Charlie Gescher, Robbie Lulay and Erin Lulay; great-granddaughter, Iris Roy and  many beloved nieces and nephews. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and sons, Christopher and Thomas.

Viewing will be from 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 8, 2010 at North Santiam Funeral Service. Recitation of Rosary will be 10:00 AM Friday, April 9, 2010, Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, April 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM both at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Stayton. Interment in St. Mary Cemetery in Stayton. Contributions may be made to Regis High School, St. Mary Grade School, Right to Life or St. Brigid’s. Serving the family is North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
