Stayton – Don, 63,
died Wednesday in Salem. He was born in Stayton and lived there
all of his life. Don was in the second class to graduate from
Regis High School in 1965. He worked in the family farming
business, Joe Koenig and Sons, until opening Koenig Repair, a
metal fabrication and welding shop, which he owned and operated
for 27 years. Don loved his work and was a true craftsman. He
loved his faith, family, and community.
Don served in the US
Army during the Vietnam War in 1968 and was awarded the Purple
Heart and the Bronze Star. He enjoyed yard work, playing pinochle,
RV traveling, and friends dropping in and visiting at his
business. Don served on the Regis High School Advisory Council,
the Stayton City Council and was a member of the Better Business
Bureau. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church
in Stayton, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the National Rifle
Association.
Don married Ruth Stupfel
on February 14, 1981 in Salem. He is survived by his wife; Ruth of
Stayton; Daughter: Angie (James) Jackman of Melbourne, Australia;
Son: Chad Koenig of Devil’s Elbow, Missouri; Mother: Patricia
Koenig of Salem; Brothers: Bob (Annie) Koenig of Turner, Dick
(Diane) Koenig of Sublimity and Dennie (Laurie) Koenig of Turner;
Uncle: Foster Thompson of Coos Bay; Sister-in-laws: Diane Duda,
Louann (Willy Bonillas) Hettwer, and Eileen (Terry) Miller;
Brother-in-laws: Chuck (Lou) Duda, Jim (Diane) Duda, John
(Melanie) Stupfel and Pete Stupfel; 26 nieces and nephews; 17
great-nieces and nephews and many cousins.
The family would like to
say a special thanks to the staff at Tierra Rose Care Center for
taking such good care of their husband and father, and to the
staff at Odyssey Hospice for their assistance.
Visitation will be
Monday, May 31, 2010 from 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM at North Santiam
Funeral Service in Stayton. Rosary will be Monday, May 31, 2010 at
7:00 PM and Funeral Mass on Tuesday, June 1, 2010 at 11:00 AM,
both at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Interment will be
in St. Mary Cemetery in Stayton. Contributions may be made to
Regis High School or St. Mary Grade School. Serving the family North
