Lyons – Leland Leroy
Manning, 85, was born on December 7, 1924 in Salem, Oregon. He
died Friday, April 9, 2010 in Portland. He will be greatly missed.
Leland grew up in the Santiam Canyon area and
graduated from Mill City High School. He married his one true
love, Kathleen Etzel, on June 17, 1950 in Stayton, Oregon. They
were happily married for nearly 60 years before he passed away.
A proud veteran of the
US Navy. Leland served aboard the USS Intrepid during World War
II, from 1943-1946. For most of his
life, Leland was a logger in the Santiam Canyon. He resided in the
Lyons area for 85 years, which meant that he knew, and was a
friend to, just about everyone in town. He was a member of St.
Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lyons and the American Legion.
Leland’s hobbies and
interests included hunting, fishing and sports. He especially
loved spending time with his family and grandchildren and was in
high spirits on Easter because he got to spend the day with a
house full of kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.
Leland was preceded in
death by his mother, Eva (Hiatt) Bressler, father, Cecil Manning,
and stepfather, Clyde Bressler. He is
survived by his loving wife, Kathleen, sons, Rich (Darlene) and
