Stayton – Wilma, 90,
was born in Scio to Byron Bates and Myrtle (Steidel) Bates. She
married Stanley Walter on January 29, 1938 in Corvallis, they were
married for 58 years. Wilma and Stanley lived on Rodgers Mountain
and Stanley preceded her in death in December 1996. They had one
son Leslie Byron. Wilma worked for 20 years for Stayton Canning
Co. (Norpac Foods), 5 years for Scio schools. She had a bakery in
her home, baking pies for a restaurant in Scio, she also made many
wedding cakes and one was
for 800 people.
Wilma was preceded in
death by her parents, son and granddaughter, Margaret Walter;
Sisters: Helen Stavang, Ruth Edwards and Colleen Shuford. She is
survived by her granddaughter: Mary (Nic) Hawken; Great-grandsons:
Ben and Gavin Hawken; Brother: Don Bates; several nieces and
nephews; also many dear friends; and her nephew, Wayne Stavang was
like a son to her and looked after her and was with her in all her
illness. After retiring from working for other people she helped
Stanley log, she drove caterpillar, set chokers and helped fall
trees. After Stanley passed away, she left the mountain and moved
to Scio and then to Stayton.
Funeral service will be
Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Oddfellows Hall in
Stayton. Private interment in Franklin Butte Cemetery in Scio.
Donations may be made to the Mennonite school in Scio. Serving
