Sublimity - Walter, 90, died
Thursday in Salem. He was born in Sublimity and lived there all
his life. Walter farmed all his life on the Hafner Farms Century
Farm. He was the world champion grass seed farmer in 1973. Walter
had a dairy, raised strawberries, and later raised beef cattle. He
would log during the winter and cut wood and raise grass seed in
the summer. Walter enjoyed deer and elk hunting, in his later
years he would attend auctions in Woodburn and Lebanon, go to flea
markets and gun shows. He collected Griswold cast iron
products. Walter was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in
Sublimity and Knights of Columbus St. Anthony Council.
He married Muriel Gries on
November 22, 1944 in Sublimity, she preceded him in death on March
22, 1987. Walter is survived by daughters: Sue Sutton of Lyons and
Peg Swanton of Portland; sons: John Hafner of Sublimity, Ted
Hafner of Aumsville, Dan Hafner and Jerry Hafner both of Lyons.
Grandchildren - 21 and 16 - great-grandchildren. He was preceded
in death by one brother, two sisters, one granddaughter and one
great-grandson.
Recitation of rosary will be
Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 7:00pm and Mass of Christian Burial
will be Thursday, May 19, 2011 at 11:00 am both at St. Boniface
Catholic Church in Sublimity. Interment will be in St. Boniface
Cemetery in Sublimity. Contributions may be made to Regis/St. Mary
Schools or Stayton community food bank. Serving the family, North
