Viola “Vi” Margie (Sharp) Hirte
October 14, 1916 – January 11, 2011


Gates – Vi, 94, a long time resident of Gates passed into God’s loving embrace on January 11, 2011. She was born on the family farm in Scotts Mills and as a young person Vi worked as a housekeeper and for a Doctor in Silverton. She married William “Bill” Hirte, who preceded her in death on December 10, 1976 at the age of 64. Vi and Bill operated Hirte’s Lockers in Mill City for 20 years. During this time she was an active member of the Order of Eastern Star, and later studied oil painting through Judy Holman’s painting classes. Also, during that period Vi participated in a bowling league where she achieved local fame as “Quite the Bowler!”. Vi also enjoyed crocheting and embroidering along with quilting with the North Santiam Quilters.

She is survived by children: Douglas (Sherry) Hirte of Connecticut, Sharon (Jim) Fuller of Newport, Cheryl (Jim) Dolby of Gates and Arnes & Lorie Hirte Jackson of Texas; Granchildren: Lisa (Peter) Muszynski, Matthew (Miranda Kalamera) Hirte, Andrea Hirte, John (Patrecia) Hirte, Jeff (Cindy) Fuller, Keith (Maria Cannava) Fuller, Mark (Tary Belmont) Fuller, Brian (Tanya) Dolby, Brent (Diannah) Dolby and Brenda (Eric) Kuiken; 18 – great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

A memorial service is planned for Sunday, January 30, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the Gates Community Church of Christ. Vi will be buried beside her husband at Fairview Cemetery in Gates. Pastor Mike Stair will be officiating. Donations may be made to Willamette Valley Hospice or the Gates Community Church of Christ. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
