John Leo Toepfer
February 24, 1923 – May 8, 2011


Mill City – John, 88, died May 8 in Gates. He was born in Coon Hollow on the family farm the youngest of 15 children born to Mike and Margaret Toepfer. John was baptized in Sublimity on April 1, 1923. He attended school at Coon Hollow and graduated from Independence school. John helped on the family farm until he joined the US Navy during WWII. He went to San Diego for boot camp in 1944. After boot camp John was stationed on board the USS Foote Destroyer for two years and was honorably discharged at Bremerton, WA., on May 3, 1946, with the rank of seaman first class.

He returned to the family farm and met Margaret “Bettie” Hall. They were married on September 22, 1950 in Lyons. Their first child David was born in 1953 in Salem, after they moved to Bend, their second child Diane was born in 1956, they divorced in 1970. John then married Virginia “Virgie” Mae Ashton on July 2, 1974 in Winnemucca, NV. They moved to Mill City where John worked in the mill, Virgie preceded him in death on January 13, 1988.

John enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, huckleberry picking, reading, mining for gold in California, arrowhead hunting, and looking for old bottles. He also enjoyed refurbishing old lawn mowers and making them work like brand new, and making small furniture like dressers.

John is survived by his son David of Eugene, his daughter Diane Cobb of Baker City; granddaughters: Rachel Smith of Dalles Port, WA., and Erin Harper of Carson City, NV.; great-granddaughters: Ashley and Ava of Carson City, NV.; sister-in-law: Marie Toepfer of Coon Hollow and nephews Larry and Ronnie Toepfer of Coon Hollow; and numerous other family members. No services will be held at his request. Private interment was in Fairview Cemetery in Mill City. Contributions may be made to Odyssey Hospice 707 13th Street, Salem, OR 97301.
