Melvin “Mel” A. Hartmann
March 16, 1931 – August 28, 2012

Salem – Mel, 81, was born in the Brown House in Stayton. He graduated from St. Boniface High School in 1949. Mel lived in Sublimity and Salem most of his life. He served in the US Navy in Japan and Korea during the Korean War. After his Military Service, Mel moved to Los Angeles to attend Television Repair School and became one of the first RCA Television Repairmen. During that time he met Walt Disney.

Mel moved back to Sublimity in 1960.  He worked at Frank Lumber Co. until 1973.  Mel then went on to work as a "Top"  insurance  salesman and later as a sales manager for Combined Insurance Co.  He retired from Combined Insurance Co. in 1994, after 21 years of service. Mel was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sublimity. He enjoyed yard work, shopping with his wife, watching sports, especially the local Regis High School teams, going to the Oregon Coast, reading and visiting with his family.  Mel always had a positive attitude and tried to pass that on to others.

He is survived by his wife Carmen (Yates) of Salem, whom he married on September 10, 1976 in Gates, OR, children: Cheryl (Lee) Kauk of Grass Valley, CA., Jeff (Brenda) Hartmann-Spahn of Birmingham, AL, Mark (Julie) Hartmann-Spahn of Rocklin, CA, Terry (Elaine) Smith of Overton, NE, and Tim (Michelle) Smith of Benkelman, NE, 13 – grandchildren and 18 – great-grandchildren. Mel was preceded in death by son Greg Smith, his three sisters, Maryanne Hartmann, Rosina Harksen and Angeline Harold and one brother, Darrel Hartmann.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be performed on Friday, August 31, 2012 at 11:00 am at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Sublimity. His private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery, Portland. Contributions may be made to Regis High School Athletic Association or the Stayton Brown House.
