Stayton – Lee, 84,
died Monday in Stayton. She was born in LaGrande, and lived in
Sheridan, Glendale, CA., Eugene, Salem and moved to Stayton in
1974. Lee received her bachelor degree from U of O, and her
masters from OCE (now Western Oregon).
She married Jim Welch in
Eugene after college. Later, Lee married Ernst Lau in 1974; he
preceded her in death in 2006. She worked as an English teacher at
Stayton High School for 20 years. Lee was a member of the Santiam
Heritage Foundation. She wrote the book “Smudged Type: The Life
And Times Of Sam Simpson” in her retirement years. Lee enjoyed
reading, knitting, gardening, traveling, being with her close
friends, historic preservation, and she was known for always
having a smile.
She is survived by
daughters Sarah Welch of Stayton and Regan (Dave) Hillesland of
Stayton, step-brother Palmer Byrkit of Portland, and step-sister
Barbara Hibbert of Star Valley, AZ., also Moe Lau and family and
Monique Lau. At her request no services will be held. Private
interment will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Sheridan.
