Leroy McGill
October 30, 1917 August 28, 2013

Marion Leroy was born on October 30, 1917 in Pierce, OK., and passed away peacefully in his home in Marion on August 28, 2013 at the age of 95. Leroy was the 7th of 9 children born to Joel and Eva McGill and arrived about 20 minutes ahead of his twin brother, Deroy.

The McGills left Oklahoma in 1924 and headed for what they hoped to be a better life in California. But then they heard that there was greater opportunity for farm workers in the state of Washington, picking apples, etc., so they headed north. Traveling such long distances with several young children proved to be more difficult than they had expected, so they pitched a tent near Junction City, found work, and decided to settle down there. Leroy attended grade school and high school in Junction City and graduated in 1936. He and his twin brother, Deroy, purchased farmland near Marion and farmed there together into their 80s, raising peppermint, squash, wheat, onions, as well as carrots, parsnips, and flax in their early years.

Leroy met and married Hazel Severson in Harrisburg in 1941, and they celebrated their 72nd anniversary on May 15th of this year. They waited 11 years before having children and then had two sons, Lyndon, born in 1952, and Delwin, born in 1955. These two sons have provided Leroy and Hazel with 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren thus far.

Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, Joel and Eva; sisters Florence, Pearl and Lenna; and brothers Yancy, Albert, Ernest, Deroy, and Theo. He leaves behind his wife of 72 years and a family who respected and loved him dearly.

Viewing will be Saturday, August 31 from 4-7 pm at North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton. Graveside service will be Sunday, September 1 at 10:00 am at Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 pm at the Church of God Seventh Day in Marion. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
