LeRoy H. Fery
March 1, 1932 – September 13, 2014

Stayton - LeRoy Harold Fery, Marion, Oregon, died at the age of 82 on Saturday, September 13, 2014 at Salem Hospital with his family by his side.

 

Born on March 1, 1932 to Fred J Fery and Luella Boedigheimer, LeRoy grew up on the family farm in Stayton, Oregon.  LeRoy married Eileen Elizabeth Van Dusen on September 27, 1958 at Saint Boniface Church in Sublimity, Oregon.

 

He is survived by his wife Eileen, his brother, Gerald, two sisters, Laura Gilmour Claussen and Marie Smith Schifferer, 3 daughters and 3 sons: Shauna Fitzner (Jeff), Thomas (Brenda), Valerie D’Cruz (Dave Dasenbrock), Andrew (Teresa Ruggles), Stephanie Arritola (Jason) and Matthew (Serena), 21 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

LeRoy attended Saint Mary’s Grade School, was a Boy Scout with Troop 55.  He graduated from Stayton High School in 1950. In 1953 he joined the Army where he was sent to Korea with the 65th Infantry Regiment. Because he could, “drive anything on wheels,” he was assigned to the motor pool where he received an award for the cleanest jeep. He received the National Defense Service Medal, United States Service Medal, and Korean Service Medal.

 

LeRoy was a lifelong parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Parish, a member of the Catholic order of Foresters, a Life Member of the VFW Santiam Post 4065 Jefferson and a volunteer fire fighter for Stayton Fire Department at the Marion Station for 25 years. Besides husband and father, LeRoy was a farmer and grower for the Stayton Canning Company/NORPAC Foods. Growing up he learned how to drive a team of draft horses, operate the family sawmill in addition to farming activities.  He enjoyed traveling, playing Pinochle and rooting for the Portland Trail Blazers.

 

The family wishes to extend thanks to Salem Hospital physicians, nurses and staff, the palliative care team.  The family is also grateful for the visits from Saint Joseph Church ministry and Immaculate Conception Church, Father Ed Coleman.

 

If family or friends wish to make donations in lieu of flowers, please consider Regis High School, Saint Mary's Grade School, Santiam Hospital in Stayton, or Salem Health in Salem.

 

There will be Vigil Service with Rosary at 7 p.m. on Thursday September 18, and a Funeral Mass Friday September 19 at 10:30 a.m., both at Immaculate Conception Church, Stayton, Oregon.  Arrangements are by North Santiam Funeral Service, 224 N Third Ave., Stayton, Oregon 97383.  Viewing available 12 noon to 6 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
