Norma Jean Gemar Kulbel Karr
May 20, 1932 – October 12, 2014

Aumsville - Norma Jean, passed away October 12, 2014 in Sublimity. She was born May 20, 1932, to Carl and Amy (Husman) Gemar in Winner, SD. Norma was active in drama, chorus, and playing the piano having won a singing contest before graduating from Winner High School in 1950.  She enrolled at the Univ. of South Dakota, with the hopes of studying art. Upon the suggestion of an advisor, Norma took the Civil Service exam and did so well, the resulting job offers kept her from returning to college. She settled on a position as an interviewer at the Winner office of the State Employment Division.

Norma was active in many community activities, the Business & Professional Women’s Club, Order of the Eastern Star and PEO.

She married Edward Kulbel in May of 1955. Using the GI Bill, Ed earned his pilot’s license and was accepted as a trainee to become an Air Traffic Controller with the FAA.  With Ed’s career, they lived in Colorado, Oklahoma, Montana and Alaska, finally settling in Hillsboro in 1975. Norma worked in banking until 1979, when she left work to care for Ed, who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and passed away in May of 1982.

In August of 1986, while attending a step-granddaughter’s wedding in Gervais, she met David Karr. They made a plan to attend the Oktoberfest a few weeks later, and were married on December 27, 1987.  Norma and David enjoyed gardening, travel, attending the symphony, and theater, especially the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, family gatherings, singing in the Stayton United Methodist Church choir, volunteering and charitable work.

She will be remembered for her gracious manner, hospitality and kind spirit.

Norma is survived by her husband David Karr of Aumsville; Sister Linda (David) Mitchell  of Rapid City, SD; six step-children Diane Schneider of Reno, NV; James Kulbel of Salem; Shirlee Porter of Stayton; Sharon Karr of Sisters; Dan Karr of Bedford, NH and Kathryn Karr of Portland.

Memorial services will be Saturday, November 22, 2014 at 11:00 am  at the Stayton United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to the Stayton United Methodist Church. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
