H. Russell, 92, of Sublimity, Oregon, died of natural causes
November 23, 2014. He was born March 25, 1922 to Elizabeth (Doerfler)
Russell and Harold (Hal) Russell. He was raised in Marion,
Oregon, where he attended Marion Elementary School, and
graduated from Aumsville High School. As a young man, he played
football and baseball and was tapped for minor league baseball
before joining the US Navy.
served active duty in WWII. When he returned home, he worked in
Seattle for Boeing, Corvallis doing construction, and later
opened his own saw mill. He went on to work for Lulay Bros.
Lumber until the mill closed. He continued his career in mill
work with Frank Lumber Co., where he was a planer man until he
November 20, 1948, Gene married his wife of 66 years, Velma
Lulay. Together they welcomed 7 children, 13 grandchildren and 5
great-grandchildren into the Russell family. He was active in
the community throughout his life, serving on the city council
and as mayor of Sublimity. His life was long, filled with things
he enjoyed: travel, hunting and keeping a meticulous home.
is survived by his wife Velma; brother, Eldon Russell; his
children, Arlene (and John) Bischoff, son-in-law Greg Zaser,
Daryl Russell, Lea (and John) Meldrum, Dennis (and Kathy)
Russell, Lori (and Todd) Preimsberg, Judy (and Ed) Vandehey, 13
grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death
by his parents, brothers Wilburn and Stanley Russell, and
daughter Anita Russell Zaser.
shared in the Catholic faith and was a lifelong member of St.
Boniface Parish in Sublimity. The Russell family asks that you

Boniface Catholic Church: Rosary 11:30 am, funeral mass 12:00pm.
