Shaw - Jan died
quietly in her home on Sunday, January 26 at the age of 63. She was born Janice Claire Case in Port Angeles, Washington,
the youngest of three children born to Forrest and Lynnette
Case. She grew up in Port Angeles, graduating from Port Angeles

In 1972, Jan graduated from Seattle University
with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education. She married Erik
Wasmann on June 10, 1972 in Port Angeles.
Soon afterward, she began her teaching career as a
substitute teacher in the Seattle School District. In 1973, Jan
and Erik moved to Salem and Jan began teaching a combined fifth
and sixth grade classroom at Sacred Heart School in Gervais.
She gave birth to her first child, son Joel, in October
1975. In 1976, the
couple moved to Newport and, while living there in 1978, Jan had
her second child, son Samuel. In 1984, the family moved to Moscow, Idaho.
After a few years at home as a young mother, Jan resumed
her teaching career at St. Rose Preschool in Moscow.
In 1986, the family returned to the Salem area and
settled into the current family home in Shaw.
Jan taught for several years at St. Joseph School in
Salem, and later at Scott and Schirle Elementary Schools in the
Salem-Keizer District. Throughout
her career, she taught every elementary grade level from
kindergarten to sixth grade, but she was most proud of her work
as a Reading Recovery teacher.
She poured her heart into her teaching, always bringing
with her into the classroom an innovative spirit, exceptional
creativity and clear delight in the company of children. With
young children gathered around her, Jan positively glowed.
She was also a talented swimmer and long-distance runner
and she enjoyed a lifetime of fitness activities and sports that
included modern dance, cycling, skiing, hiking, and camping and
snow trips with friends and family.
She is survived by her
husband, Erik Wasmann of Shaw; sons, Joel Wasmann (and wife
Rhiannon) of Portland and Samuel Wasmann (and wife Leslie) of
Portland; brothers, Carl Case of Huntsville, Alabama and Dale
Case of Port Angeles; and grandchildren, Maya, Will, Claire and
