Nestor J. Van Handel

May 13, 1935 – August 26, 2015

Portland - Nestor, 80, died on August 26th at Emanuel Hospital in Portland. Nestor was born on May 13,1935 in Stayton. He was the oldest son of Joseph and Magdalen Van Handel. In 1954 he graduated from St. Boniface High School. At St. Boniface Nestor was known for his tenor singing voice and was the lead tenor in the school’s musical and theatrical productions.

Nestor followed his grandfather and father in the family business. For 50 years Nestor completed brick and stone work on hundreds of homes and businesses in the greater Stayton/Sublimity area. He took an immense amount of care and pride in his masonry work. Nestor was known for his attention to detail and artistic craftsmanship.

Nestor will be remembered for his wonderful humor, kind heart and generosity. He was a loyal friend always willing to help anyone in need. He had passion for animals, photography, gardening, and travel. After retiring Nestor moved to Portland.

Nestor is survived by his twin sister: Gladys Shankle of Seattle, WA; brother: Urban (Linda) Van Handel of Stayton; sister: Mary Van Handel of Portland; and brother: Peter (Tina) Van Handel of Stayton. Nestor was also a much beloved uncle to his nieces Cindy Devine, Peggy Lulay, and Ann Shankle-Glasper and nephew Joe Van Handel.

Private family services held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with burial at St. Mary Cemetery following. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
