Stayton – John,
81, died March 15 in Salem. He was born and raised in Astoria,
living in Portland for 10 years before moving to Stayton 45
years ago. John served in the US Army as a Russian Linguist
and was stationed in Turkey. He received his Bachelors degree
from the University of Oregon and two Masters degrees from
Portland State University and in 1967 was an exchange student
John married C.
Diane DeTemple on September 7, 1968 in Vancouver, WA.
He taught middle school for 31 years in Stayton and
also coached basketball, wrestling and baseball. John was a
member of the Stayton United Methodist Church for 40 years,
where he sang in the church choir, served on the
Administrative Council and taught Sunday School for 15 years.
John was an avid reader and volkswalker. He enjoyed crossword
puzzles, sports and was a big Red Sox fan.
John is survived by
his wife: Diane of Stayton; children: John “Jack” (Laura)
McDermott of Tallahassee, FL and Megan (McGuire) Fleming of
Hopedale, MA; brothers: Van (Nancy) Kennell of Astoria and
Michael (Michelle) McDermott of Vancouver, WA; sister: Laurie
McDermott of Portland and granddaughter: Josie Fleming of
Hopedale, MA. He was preceded in death by his parents, John
McDermott & Vivienne Kennell and brother, Jerry McDermott.
A memorial service
will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 3:00 pm at Stayton
United Methodist Church. Contributions may be made to the
church music fund or the Stayton Food Bank. Serving the
