Donald Lee Kuiken
September 17, 1930 – April 13, 2017

Lyons – Donald, 86, a lifelong resident of Lyons went to be with the Lord following a recent heart attack. He was born at the Brown House in Stayton to Martin and Elva(Merrill) Kuiken and was joined by 3 sisters, Carol, Joy and Kathy, all growing up on wonderful McCully Mountain. Don didn’t leave his mountain top home other that a short stint at OSU and serving the Army during the Korean War stationed at San Luis Obispo and Fort Lewis.

His comfort and solace was his family and farm which he started working alone as a teen when his father passed. Don married Marilyn Baltzer in Lyons on October 3, 1953 and together they spent the next 56 years farming, raising cattle and taking care of their family and a multitude of friends and extended family until Marilyn passed in 2010. He moved to Lancaster Village assisted living in 2015.

Don was a self-employed logger for many years, followed by working at Mt. Jefferson Lumber and Freres Lumber all while continuing to raise cattle on the family farm. He was a school board member for Mari Linn School for many years and an active member of Canyon Baptist Church in Lyons until his health started to fail. Don was always ready with a helping hand.

He is survived by his children: Cheryl (Norm) Hughes of Lyons, Marty (Cathy) Kuiken of Lyons and Eric (Brenda) Kuiken of Stayton; sisters: Joy Dersham of Creswell and Kathy (Jack) Adams of Stayton; 7 grandchildren: Derek (Shelley) Hughes, Kyle (Bree) Hughes, Bret (Rachel) Hughes, Christina (Gary) McClain, Jessica Manitsas and Kadence and Kaylee Kuiken; 12 great-grandchildren: Lexey Thrasher, Peyton Muzechenko, Chase, Haley, Easton, Hudson, Madden, Avery, Jack and Mara Hughes, Cassity McClain and Risa Merrel; 1 great-great-granddaughter: Olive Thrasher, and many nieces and nephews and their families. Don was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marilyn, daughter, Suzy, sister Carol Grimes and great-granddaughters, Ashlyn and Quinn Hughes.

A special thank you to the staff at Lancaster Village and Serenity Hospice for their care. Donations can be made to Gideons International, East Linn Camp PO Box 1044 Lebanon, OR 97355. Funeral service will be Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Canyon Bible Fellowship Church in Lyons. Interment will be in Fox Valley Cemetery, Lyons. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
