August 1, 1919 – January 13, 2018

On January 13, 2018, Robert Lawrence Mickey passed from this world, into Heaven to be with his Lord and Savior, and to be reunited with his sweetheart of 69 years, Eilleen Tarpley Mickey. Bob was born August 1, 1919 in Plainsville, KS to Lawrence I. Mickey and Rosalie Trotter Mickey.

He began his education in Plainsville and eventually graduated from Salem High School in 1937. He attended Willamette University, then started work at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation. Bob met Eilleen at a youth group function and they married in 1941. He joined the SeaBees in 1942, serving in Bizerte, Tunisia in preparation for the invasion of Italy. While waiting for discharge, son Randy was born in 1945. After returning to civilian life the family settled in Aumsville, where son Bobby was born in 1947. Bob started work as owner of an auto and diesel mechanic shop. Over the years, he was employed as a school janitor, bus driver, delivery truck driver and hardware store owner. His final career was as owner and mechanic at Mickey Sales and Service in Aumsville.

Bob was very active in his community. He served on the Aumsville Fire Department for 32 years and was fire chief for 12 of those years. He was a scout master in the 1950s, and served on the Aumsville and Cascade school boards. He was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, Aumsville Historical Society, American Legion and was a lifetime Free Mason.  He and his wife belonged to various travel clubs. After retiring, he and Eilleen traveled. They visited Europe and traveled the US in their RV. They particularly enjoyed fishing in Alaska as well as the lakes and streams of Oregon.

He was preceded in death by parents Lawrence and Rosalie, brothers John and Jim, sister Zelma, wife Eilleen, and great grandson Samuel. He is survived by sons Randall (Kathy) of Gates and Bobby of Sun City, AZ. He has 8 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Marcey’s Place in Sublimity and Amorous Care Home in Salem for their tender care of our dad and grandfather. A memorial service will be held 2pm, Saturday, January 27, 2018 at Bethel Baptist Church 645 Cleveland St. Aumsville, OR. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, the Aumsville Historical Society, or the Aumsville Fire Dept. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
