passed away at home in Amherst, New York after battling a
severe infection. Born to Evelyn and James A. Hanson, he lived
his early years in Salem, Oregon fielding baseballs in the
Parrish League. In 1982, the family moved to Mill City where
Jim attended Santiam Canyon Schools playing summer league and
high school baseball. He could be seen most often at shortstop
and occasionally pitching or in the outfield. One could say
baseball was his first love.
graduating from Santiam, Jim attended Western Business College
and Chemeketa studying accounting. It was at this time he met
Sara Baker whom he married January 16, 1992 in Kodiak, Alaska.
Chief Petty Officer Hanson served the United States Coast
Guard from February 8, 1993 to January 3, 2017.
loved the outdoors, helping others, his family, watching
sports (go Red Sox, Broncos), and spending time with friends.
He dedicated much of his time as a volunteer firefighter (Mill
City, Gates, Salem, and Newport, Oregon; Kodiak, Alaska and
Norwich, Connecticut) as well as EMT (Kodiak, Norwich and
Newport). He was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn.
is survived by his father James, brother Tony, sister Ellen,
wife Sara, and children Stephanie, Sean (Cassie), Jacob,
Donna, and Travis.
