– Mel, 79, was born on October
31st, 1939 in Salem. He attended grade
school in Keizer and graduated from North Salem High School.
Mel joined the Navy right out of high school in 1958. He
married Dolores Abbey on November 10th, 1961, and was honorably
discharged in 1963. Mel purchased his home in 1963 also. Along
with all of those milestones, Mel started to work for the
State of Oregon for General services in the printing plant,
Mel and Dolores had two children together Angela (Bill) Roush
(Keizer) and Jason (Patty) Hasche (Salem).
Dolores separated later in life and Mel met and married Judy
31st, 1986, which gave Mel additional
children, Kim (Drew) Keech (Castle Rock, CO), Eric (Saundra)
Neperud (Bath, ME), Gary (Amy) Neperud (Albany, OR) and Karen
(Gerald) Hunter (Hubbard, OR). Mel has 19 grandchildren and 5
Mel retired from the State of
Oregon in 1990, prior to Mel’s retirement he was a major
contributor to planning the underground parking structure in
downtown Salem. He enjoyed wood working, hunting,
fishing and crabbing. What Mel loved the most is his
family and friends (by the way if you ever met Mel you were
known as family at that moment). He thrived on getting
together with family and friends for any celebration or
crabbing/fishing trip. Mel passed away on April
1st, he is now catching the forever “monsterous
