Vesta Ellen Watson
October 18, 1926 - June 4, 2020

Our Mother, went to be with her heavenly Father, on Thursday June 4th 2020.  She became a Christian as a girl, and was devoted to the Lord her entire life.  She attended First Baptist Church in Portland, for 72 years. During her membership she made many lifetime friends in the 'Homemakers' class.  For several years she taught two-year old’s in Sunday school. She also assisted the Cambodian Church at FBC, and helped prepare the 'Trumpeter' for mailing.

She was born in Glenn, California to Durrell and Ruth Middlecamp. At age 13, she moved with her mother to Riverside, CA; and helped care for her grandparents. In 1947; she traveled to Portland, OR and lived with her father. There she met her husband, [Jerry] Gerald Miles Young, at a 4th of July picnic. They were married January 3, 1948. They had two children: Steven and Sharon. While on a family vacation; Jerry died in Riverside, CA on July 15, 1968.

Mom remarried in 1971 to James Russell Watson. Their marriage lasted 20 years, until parted by his death on March 21, 1991. Afterwards, for 15 years until his death in 2013; her loving companion was Merle Gehring, a childhood friend from Los Angeles, CA.

Ellen worked several years for Stacy's Cleaners, was a talented homemaker, and a lifetime gardener. Her yard and gardens have been admired in the neighborhood for over 60 years; and more widely admired, lately, when pictured on social media.

Mom was preceded in death by Jerry, Russ and Merle (each was a US Navy veteran); by granddaughter: Amy Young; and by her three brothers: Dayton, Roy and Bill Middlecamp.  She is survived by children: Steve Young (Dana) and Sharon Young; sister-in-law’s: Darlene Mai (David), Laurine Middlecamp and Nellie Watson; grandsons: David Young and Geoff Young; and by many beloved nieces & nephews.

The family extends thanks and its deep appreciation to Rachel Smith-Daigle and Emily Bryans for their Christian service, friendship, and care for Mom the past two years.

Contributions can be made to First Baptist Church in Portland; Camp Arrah Wanna in Welches, OR; Meals on Wheels in Portland; 'Wounded Warriors Family Support' of Omaha, NE; and/or the American Heart Association. Serving the family, North Santiam Funeral Service, Stayton.
