Installing DOS Sound Drivers in Win95/98

There is no automatic installation for the DOS drivers in Windows95 as there is when doing a DOS/Win3.1 installation. However, it is a relatively simple process to install the DOS drivers if the following instructions are followed.

1. Install the Win95 SB software from the CD ROM. This is initiated from the file titled 'setup' inside the WIN95 directory. Run this by doing the following:

A. Click on 'START'
B. Click on 'RUN'
C. Type {CD Drive Letter}:\WIN95\SETUP.EXE
D. (Follow instructions for installation - do a FULL install, placing files in the
recommended directory)

After completion, all of the needed files will be present in the system

2. Confirm that the needed drivers were copied to the system by doing the following:

A. Click on 'START'
B. Click on 'FIND'
C. Click on 'Files or Folders'
D. Make sure the 'Look in' drive is (C:) and the search Subfolders option is checked.
E. In the 'Named' text window, enter CTSB16.SYS, then press {Enter}.

The file should be found. It is generally contained in the directory:

PROGRAM FILES*\CREATIVE\CTSND\DRV\

*Note: In DOS, this directory will be named Progra~1 (It's the same directory, but DOS is restricted to 8 characters).

3. Add the appropriate lines to your CONFIG.SYS by doing the following:

A. Click 'START'
B. Click 'PROGRAMS'
C. Click 'MS-DOS Prompt'
D. From your DOS prompt, you will probably be in the C:\WINDOWS directory. You
will need to get to the root directory. This is a C: prompt with no subdirectory listed
behind it. To get there, type CD.. {Enter} until you see just a C:\ prompt.
E. From the C prompt, type EDIT and press enter. The MS DOS editor will appear.

From the MS-DOS editor:

A. Click on 'File' and then 'Open'
B. In the directories box (the one on the right):
- Press the Down arrow until the directory 'Program Files'
is highlighted - then press {Enter}.
- Press the Down arrow until the directory 'Creative'
is highlighted - then press {Enter}.
-Press the Down arrow until the directory 'CTSND'
is highlighted - then press {Enter}.
C. From the Files box (the one on the left):
- Highlight CONFIG.TXT and press {Enter}.
You should see something similar to the following appear:

Device=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND\DRV\CTSB16.SYS /UNIT=0 /BLASTER=A:220 I:5 D:1 H:5 /WIN95
Device=C:\PROGRA~1\CREATIVE\CTSND\DRV\CTMMSYS.SYS

[The lines in your file may vary depending upon the base address settings that were assigned to the card at setup. For example, the A:220 may be A:330 or I:5 may be I:9.]

These are the lines that need to be added to CONFIG.SYS. You may copy and patse these lines to CONFIG.SYS by doing the following:

A. Highlight the two lines present in CONFIG.TXT
B. Click on 'Edit' and then 'Copy'
C. Click on 'File' and then 'Open'
D. From the directories box (the one on the right):
- Highlight the two periods (..) at the top of the box, then press {Enter}.
- Continue this until you have returned to the root directory -
You will know you are there when there are no periods at the top of the directory
list. This means you are back in the root directory.
- From the files box (the one on the left) press the down arrow until you have
highlighted CONFIG.SYS. Then press {Enter}
E. Move your down arrow to the end of the CONFIG.SYS file. Note: It is possible
that the file may be empty.
F. Once you are at the end of the file, click on 'Edit' and 'Paste'. The two lines
that were copied from CONFIG.TXT should appear.
G. Now, save the file by clicking 'File' and 'Save'.
H. Exit by clicking on 'File' and 'Exit'.

4. Finishing up:

A. Type EDIT CONFIG.SYS and press {Enter}. This will confirm if the file saved
properly. Once you have confirmed that the two new lines exist, once again click on
'File' and 'Exit' to return to a DOS prompt.

B. From the DOS prompt, type EXIT {Enter} to return to WIN95.

C. Now, Click on START and 'Shut Down'. Choose 'Restart the computer'
IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THE COMPUTER BE RESTARTED FOR THE
CHANGES TO TAKE EFFECT.

D. Once the computer has re-booted, do the following to confirm the presence of the DOS sound card drivers:

- Click on 'Start'
- Click on 'Programs'
- Click on 'MS-DOS prompt'
- From the MS-DOS prompt, type MEM /C /P {press Enter}
- Look for the following device drivers included in the
Modules Using Memory Below 1 MB:
CTSB16.SYS
CTMMSYS.SYS

There will be other device drivers listed as well, but these are the ones we just added, and they must be present for The Auto-Mate to record and playback audio.

E. Press enter to return to a DOS prompt, then type EXIT and enter to return to WIN95.

This should be all you need to do. The Auto-Mate will run fine whether you run it from an icon shortcut in Windows, or do a shutdown to an MS-DOS prompt.

If you ever do an F8 option when booting the system and choose boot to command prompt only or to load a previous version of DOS, remember that the system will load another version of the CONFIG.SYS. In this case, that version of CONFIG.SYS will have to be altered to hold the sound card drivers as well. In normal situations, you will not be booting to a command prompt. If in doubt, re-boot the system and let Windows95 come up all the way before exiting to a DOS prompt.

Note: Remember to make sure the compression features are turned off. DOS compression will not function in a WIN95 equipped system.
