Chapter
LXXXVII

We found Debbie and Cindy asleep together in the last cell, at the end of the corridor. Tina and I awoke the pair of sleeping women by snuggling up to them in their blankets. They both wanted to hear all about our trip, but we wouldn't say anything, instead insisting that they keep us warm while we slept, then we could talk. They both laid back down with us, and sandwiched us between them, sharing their beds, and body heat with us. I was asleep in no time, lost in my dreams.

Debbie and Tina were gone when I woke up. Cindy was still in the cell with me, and handed me a note she had found when she'd woke up, a short time before I did. It read:

Cindy and Geof,

Debbie and I have gone into the City to bring back the next batch of clients. We should be back before mid-night, and if all goes well, will have a group of ten who want to leave the city when we return. In the meantime, why don't you two enjoy the time together, and slime the cell while we're gone.

Don't worry about us, we know this city well, and have no intention of being detected by the Counsel spies.

Tina.

When I finished the note, I looked at Cindy and said, "Well, it looks like the two of them have fixed things so we don't have anything to do except wait here for them, and hope they make it back sometime soon!"

"Why? Where does it say they've gone?

"To gather up the next bunch of clients for our Railroad."

"If that's what they're doing, we won't have long to wait, There are more women than I can count who want to leave here. The problem will be to not have too many who want to go all at the same time."

"Don't you think the requirement that they be blindfolded, and bound, will keep many who would go otherwise from going?"

"Yes, there will be those who will not make the journey because of those requirements, but that percentage will be small. Most of those who want to leave here and go live with men will accept those requirements without hesitating."

I didn't respond any further on the subject of recruiting difficulty. I'd noticed the pile of books from the library, and was thumbing through them absently. "We ought to take these back where they came from." and began gathering them up to take to the Tower Library. Cindy volunteered to help, and took half the pile from me, and we started for the top of the Tower.
