Variable Speeders

By: JD Hoeye

After moving back to the canyon area and beginning to use Highway 22 again, I soon noticed a great number of drivers doing something extraordinarily frustrating; not to mention hazardous. Many drivers will drive at 50 to 55 mph, or even slower, on the two lane sections. Increase their speed to nearly 70 mph where the highway has passing lanes; then, abruptly reduce their speed to the former when the lanes converge to one again.

The practice, as previously stated, is frustrating beyond words to the rest of us, particularly truckers, not to mention extremely dangerous; eminently so during inclement weather and/or hours of darkness.

The situation occurs more often in areas where signing is inadequate, or non-existent. Installation of additional signs may be effective by reminding drivers the speed limit does not automatically change to freeway speeds with the addition of a traffic lane. Signs indicating the additional lanes are provided as refuge for slower traffic, to allow normal traffic to pass safely, might also prove helpful.

Another, additional, and/or alternative measure, might be the issuance of citations to those drivers who insist on the practice; perhaps for impeding normal traffic flow.
