Friendly Enemies

By: JD Hoeye

If you live in Mill City chances are you know a thief. Whether you are aware you know a thief is not the point. Chances are you do. After all, Mill City is a small community.

Thankfully, most inhabitants of our small town are honest and will go out of their way to stay that way. Regrettably there are a few in our midst who have no respect, at least where other peoples property is concerned, and prowl the town expressly looking for opportunities to abscond therewith.

The target is usually property which is, for one reason or another, left unattended. Items in unlocked cars are a favorite. Tools, bicycles and small power equipment in unsecured out buildings are easy prey for the sneak thief as well. Poorly lighted areas without perimeter fences but with multiple access routes are favored skulking locations.

Be especially wary of a stranger or vague acquaintance stopping by unexpectedly on the pretext of selling or buying some obscure, unsolicited item. Never leave them alone for even the most limited time. Doing so leaves the thief more than ample opportunity to lift and secret anything handy on or about their person. Those wearing oversize, bulky, or baggy clothing, carrying a large hand bag and/or a rucksack should be carefully watched; particularly if known or suspected to be insolvent.

Lastly, if you know a person to be a thief, share that information with your friends and neighbors. Forewarned is forearmed. And, if you become the victim of a thief, report the fact as well as your suspicions to the authorities as well.
