Fair Employment Practices

By: JD Hoeye

There is a business firm in the Santiam Canyon area which is using what may be a prohibited employment practices. At this writing I have no intention of naming that business because I see no need to; the firm in question should be quite able to identify themselves from the information I do include herein.

Suffice it to say the following:

  1. For the last several months there have been continuous advertisements for skilled tradesmen published by the firm.
  2. I have no doubt I possess the skills requisite to the positions advertised.
  3. On several occasions I have contacted the firm regarding those advertisements, making application for employment in those positions advertised -- including follow up contacts with the department supervisors.
  4. My efforts have yielded a total of zero interviews.

All the above is interesting in view of the fact the advertisements for the same positions are still running; and, lead me to some disturbing conclusions:

  1. The advertisements are not genuine -- only intended to produce a pool of names to draw on at some future time of need.
  2. The decision not to interview this applicant is being made on some criteria not relevant or related to the qualifications set forth in the advertisement.

In either case the firm in question is using employment practices which are prohibited by Oregon State Statute of Law.
