Not long ago I joined the ever growing group of people who have Web access, and my first act was to go for an exploration surf. Naturally I was somewhat, (very?), awed at the extent and variety of information available over the Net, particularly news items.
On several news sights I found articles relating to a bill passed by congress and signed into law by President Clinton called the Telecommunications Bill. A bill which, even at a first glance, flies in the face of the First Amendment. Free Speech/Press.
This writer can only hope a direct challenge to the constitutionality of the bill will be forthcoming. This writer also hopes the Supreme Court will, at that time, do what it has done in the past and return control of what the American people read or dont read, see or dont see, where it belongs; to the individual citizen.
Could it be the passage of the Telecommunications Bill is just another attempt by a small, elite, group of citizens to control what information the rest of the populace has access to. I.E.: the Government. Might it also be this be just another move on the part of government to control the population by controlling the information available to the people?
I think so.
