| Notes for Joseph Chester Mexico Macicot |
The story behind the Mexico name seems to come from a story passed down from my great Aunt's that the name was origianally Massicotte from Canada into Michigan which became Mexicotte. The story continues to the fact that the Postman would always have a hard time delivering mail due to too many first and last name similarities, that everyone decided that some would change to Mexico by dropping the tte and my Grandpa's dad decided to change theirs to Macicot, to ensure they got their mail with no similarities. But, my grandpa used Mexico when he had children. My grandpa was the 4th child of Joseph and Lucy. Family lived on James Street in River Rouge, MI when he was born. Had a small white poodle named queeny. Queeny got hit by a car not too long after Eva died. Grandpa was getting out of his car and the dog took off between the parked cars at our house in Southgate, Michigan on 13323 Backus Street, and got hit. It limped for a little while before she died. Grandpa later got another dog that looked like Queeny, but wasn't as calm and friendly as Queeny was. I believe her name was Princess. Grandpa had a heart attack while living with his girlfriend Margie Sly in Lincoln Park, Michigan on 703 LeBlanc. He died shortly after in Seaway Hospital, Trenton, MI. They tried to get a Catholic Priest from St. Josephs Church to attend him at the hospital, but he wouldn't because Grandpa hadn't gone to church for years. After that, the family never went to a Catholic Church anymore.
We would always go Skeet shooting or fishing in the Detroit River on Saturday's. We would also stay a week in a cabin on Sugar Island between the Upper Peninsula and Canada to fish for a week or so. When I was in elementary school he was a janitor at my school. He would give me a dollar at times when he saw me in the hallway. He would also take balls home that he found on the school roof to give to me. That was part of his job to clean all the balls off the roof.
Worked for Penn Salt chemical. Then worked for Labadees driving a dump truck. Then janitor work at various locations.
Grandpa's dad died when Grandpa was 40 years old. Grandpa's Grandpa died when Grandpa was 12 years old.
Grandpa and the family also rented a house on a Farm near King Road and Goodith. The farm was owned by a Mr. Brow.
My Dad, Pat grew up in the Dickinson House. Then Grandpa sold it to Chet/Helen and moved into the house at 2656 Fifth Street. Eventually we moved into that house and Grandpa moved to Riverview. After Eva died and Grandpa met Margie, he moved in with her in Lincoln Park.
Dickinson street in Trenton, MI is in what is called Cork Town. It was two streets by the railroad tracks near a wine distillery, (hence the name Cork). It was an all French Community with many if not all people being related, one way or another. Cork Town was also called French Town.
Grandpa couldn't afford a plot for Florence when she died, so he sold his boat to Bob and Eva Madeline Schinivar to purchase some plots from them at Michigan Memorial Park in Flatrock Michigan. When Grandpa died he was buried next ot Florence. When my father, Patrick died, I wanted to bury his ashes in Grandpa's grave, but the plot was still under Eva's name, so Aunt Helen found her in Northern Michigan. Her daughter Tracy had power of attorney to sign for her to give authorization to bury the ashes in the plot. They never finished the paperwork back when Grandpa sold the boat to Bob. |
