Chapter
X

As usual, Lana spoke for the group when the silence was broken. What she had to say was nothing more than I already knew. The content of her words was harsh, based in the reality of the situation, but her voice was gentle, showing a depth of compassion I'd not expected from my court as a whole.

Acting as one, the group guided me to a nearby cluster of furniture where we sat. Lana, supported and encouraged by the others, spoke to me, in a low, quiet, voice. There was a hint of urgency as she stammered in her effort to begin. She finally took a deep breath, and dove in.

"All of us are aware of the bond that has grown between you and Lisa. In our turns we have spoken with her, and are beginning to understand there may be value in the old idea of men and women coupling together exclusively."

"However, even if we believed that men and women should join together for life, our situation precludes allowing you and Lisa to deny our species the chance to survive by doing so right now. For this reason Lisa is, leaving our company. In time you and she may again be together. She has told us that is what she wishes to have happen, but for now, there is a greater need, and she has agreed with us, making the choice to go."

My anger and violent response must have been expected. As I rose and began to lash out at the five who were near me, a voice from the hall arrested my actions.
