Chapter
XI

The owner of the disembodied voice followed it through the doorway. It was Lisa, her face streaked with tears. She was still approaching when she began to speak. Her words cut deep and true.

"I've been listening and I believe Sandy was right when she said I was going to ruin any chance we may have for our plans to succeed if you and I to become emotionally involved. I don't know what made me loose sight of our purpose. I was wrong to think you and I could be friends while you dedicate yourself to the impossible task we have asked you to do."

Lisa was looking straight at me when she continued, "Geof, I want you to know I will never be forget you. If you need a friend to lean on, call me. But I also want you to know, I will shun you forever, if you fail my one request." After a short pause she went on. "I want you to do what you must, and show our sickened world there is a salvation. It is in the children we women will bear as the fruit of your attentions to us. Make love to as many of us as you can, and when you can't continue, then rest."

"I think it may help you to know that every one here in this tower will defend you against our fellows in the streets if they should decide to try and take you by force." Turning back to the group she asked. "Is there less we can do than defend his life with our own in return for the service he can render, not only to the few of you, but to our whole city, and our species as well?"

I could find no words, nor the will, to argue with her. What she said was true.
